The Volusia Young Marines did the honors as a Color Guard on Saturday June 17, 2023, at the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and Museum commemoration of Flag Day.
Two of the Volusia Marines, from left, YM PFC. Langlas and YM PFC Klimas raised the Star-Spangled Banner, the Florida State Flag and the United States Lighthouse Service pennant at the opening of morning’s activities.
Despite the heavy rain that day, lighthouse docents offered challenging and fun hands-on workshops exploring the use of flags as communication devices and signals. Each youngster received a take-home craft to commemorate the concept of the day, and a special presentation at 1 pm that afternoon featured Lighthouse Lead Docent John Mann discussing the history of the many flags which flew over Florida in a five-hundred-year period.
Especially noteworthy, The Ponce Inlet Lighthouse is a National Historic Landmark, so named in 1998, and one of twelve historically significant American lighthouses in the country.
