Fall into Outreach: Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and Museum's Autumn Collaborations

Fall always brings a time for collaboration for the Programs Department of the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and Museum. As the weather begins to change and people begin venturing out into their communities again without the summer heat, historical societies, cultural institutions, and museums work together to bring educational and enjoyable experience to guests all over Volusia County.

This fall, the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and Museum is proud to continue this spirit of cooperation both here at the lighthouse and across Volusia County. There will be plenty of opportunities to interact with volunteers and docents at festivals, community events, and Volusia County School evenings, the volunteers of the lighthouse are will have an active schedule.

Make sure to stop by and speak with our knowledgeable representatives at Ormond Beach Historical Society’s Collectors Day on September 23^rd, Port Orange Family Days on the weekend of October 14^th and 15^th, and Barberville Fall Jamboree on November 4^th and 5^th. There may even be giveaways and prizes available for participating visitors. Volunteers and staff of the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse will also be visiting various libraries and cultural institutions to bring exciting historic presentations to the people of Volusia County.

On October 4th at 5:30pm, Lead Docent John Mann will discuss the Spirit of the Greatest Generation at the Ormond Beach Regional Library. This presentation focuses on the innovation and advancements made from World War I through the 1980s. He will do the same presentation on the other side of the county at DeBary Hall during a Lemonade Lecture on Veterans Day, Saturday November 11^th at 1:00pm. You will not want to miss this presentation, taking a retrospective look of reverence and funny anecdotes.

Another offering provided by the lighthouse will take place on November 16^th at the New Smyrna Regional Library at 2:00pm by Registrar and Assistant Curator Felipe De Paula. Entitled Timucua of Northeast Florida, guests will be introduced to the culture and customs of some of Florida’s earliest inhabitants.

Also, the lighthouse will open its doors to cultural institutions from across the state on November 18^th for Indigenous Peoples Heritage Day. One of the most popular events run each year at the lighthouse, visitors will have the opportunity to travel back in time and discover the fascinating history of the indigenous people who once lived along the Volusia County inland waterways and throughout the local Florida region. Learn about the Timucua and Seminole as you explore the historic light station and participate in interactive workshops, living history demonstrations, and other activities presented by lighthouse staff, volunteers, and representatives from museums and cultural sites located throughout Central Florida.

Volunteer opportunities

The success of all of the programs provided by the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse rely on the dedication and hard work of our amazing volunteer corps. They are the backbone of the programs department and we appreciate everything that they do for the us. The Preservation Association is always looking for individuals interested in becoming volunteers. Monthly meetings and trainings will be provided for all volunteers, as well as the opportunity to preserve and interpret the history of a National Historic Landmark.
