Light Station Tours And the Sunshine State Standards of Learning

School tours at the Ponce De Leon Inlet Light Station include information relating to local, state, national and world history; earth sciences such as weather and the ecology; language arts and American literature; and the science of lenses and light. Specific standards which are addressed include:

Science

PreK-2 Science

  • The student understands that all matter has observable, measurable properties. SC.A.1.1
  • The student knows that light can pass through some objects and not others. SC.B.1.1.2
  • The student recognizes patterns in weather. SC.D.1.1.3
  • The student understands the interaction and organization of the Solar System in the universe and how this affects life on earth. SC.E.1.1
  • The student understands the consequences of using limited natural resources. SC.G.2.1
  • The student knows that the activities of humans affect plants and animals in many ways. SC.G.2.1.2
  • The student knows that, in doing science, it is often helpful to work with a team and to share findings with others. SC.H.1.1.3

Grades 3-5 Science

  • The student determines that the properties of materials can be compared and measured. SCA.1.2.1
  • The student knows that the water cycle is influenced by temperature, pressure, and the topography of the land. SC.D.1.2.3
  • The student knows that the surface of the Earth is in a continuous state of change as waves, weather, and shifts of the land constantly change and produce many new features. SC.D.1.2.4
  • The student knows that to compare and contrast observations and results is an essential skill in science. SC.H.1.2.4
  • The student knows that a model of something is different from the real thing, but can be used to learn something about the real thing. SC.H.1.2.5

Grades 6-8 Science

  • The student knows the positive and negative consequences of human action on the Earth's systems SC.D.2.3.2
  • The student understands that humans are part of an ecosystem and their activities may deliberately or inadvertently alter the equilibrium in the ecosystem. SC.G.2.3.4

Grades 9-12 Science

  • The student knows how climatic patterns on Earth result from an interplay of many factors (Earth's topography, its rotation on its axis, solar radiation, the transfer of heat energy where the atmosphere interfaces with lands and oceans, and wind and ocean currents). SC.D.1.4.1
  • The student understands that the amount of life any environment can support is limited and that human activities can change the flow of energy and reduce the fertility of the Earth. SC.G.2.4.5
  • The student knows the ways in which humans today are placing their environmental support systems at risk (e.g., rapid human population growth, environmental degradation, and resource depletion.) SC.G.2.4.6
  • The student knows that the value of a technology may differ for different people and at different times. SC.H.3.4.5

PreK-2 Language Arts
